Spirituality in our school
What Spirituality means to our children...
Understanding Spirituality
Spirituality is a deeply personal and universal aspect of human experience. It involves our search for meaning, purpose, and connection — with ourselves, with others, with nature, and for many, with God. In education, spirituality is not confined to religious practice; it is about nurturing the inner life of children and adults, encouraging reflection, awe, compassion, and a sense of belonging.
In schools, spirituality is often expressed through moments of stillness, wonder, creativity, and ethical reflection. It helps children explore big questions about life, identity, and values, and supports their emotional and moral development.

Spirituality in Our School
At Limpsfield Church of England Infant School, spirituality is woven into the fabric of our daily life. As a Church school, we are guided by Christian values such as love, hope, forgiveness, and respect. These values shape our relationships, our curriculum, and our collective worship. But spirituality here goes beyond religious observance — it is about helping children explore their own sense of meaning and purpose.
We actively encourage children to reflect on their own thoughts and feelings about spirituality. This happens both in lesson time and during collective worship, where we ask open-ended questions like:
- “What do you think it means to feel peaceful inside?”
- “When have you felt a sense of wonder or awe?”
- “What helps you feel connected to others or the world around you?”
These discussions are child-led and inclusive, allowing pupils to express their ideas freely, whether rooted in faith, nature, relationships, or personal experience. Staff listen carefully and respond with respect and curiosity, helping children develop language to describe their inner lives and values.
We create space for spiritual development through:
- Collective Worship: A time for reflection, celebration, and connection with Christian teachings and broader spiritual themes.
- Nature and Outdoor Learning: Encouraging awe and wonder through engagement with the natural world, fostering a sense of stewardship and interconnectedness.
- Creative Expression: Through art, music, storytelling, and play, children explore their inner lives and express their thoughts and feelings.
- Values-led Curriculum: Our teaching promotes moral development, emotional resilience, and a sense of belonging.
Spirituality in Our Community
Limpsfield is a village rich in history and community spirit. Our school works closely with St Peter’s Church and local organisations to nurture a sense of shared purpose and service. Whether through harvest celebrations, charitable initiatives, or intergenerational projects, we encourage children to see themselves as part of a wider story — one that values kindness, justice, and hope.
We believe that spirituality helps children grow into thoughtful, compassionate individuals who are equipped not just for academic success, but for life. It is our privilege to walk alongside them on this journey.
